Raising little ones can feel joyful, busy, and sometimes overwhelming—and you don’t have to do it alone. Best Start is here to support your family’s journey from pregnancy through preschool with free programs that encourage learning, connection, and fun.

Home Visits: Personal support for your family, right at home

Work one-on-one with a caring home visitor who supports you and your child through the everyday joys and challenges of parenting. Eligible families receive two visits each month with guidance on child development, activity ideas, and referrals to helpful resources.

You’ll also create a family support plan with goals to work toward, and enjoy free field trips around Chicagoland. If your family doesn’t qualify for home visiting, you can still join playgroups and parent workshops—and bring a friend!

Playgroups: Come play, explore and connect

Best Start playgroups are free and open to all families. These themed groups give little ones a chance to play and explore while building social, language, and motor skills. Parents also meet and connect with other families in the area.

Some examples of our playgroups include:

Messy Play: builds creativity, fine motor skills, and independence
Water Play: encourages exploration, problem-solving, and sensory learning
Gross Motor Play: builds confidence, coordination, and healthy habits
Story Time Read-Alouds: develops language, imagination, and a love of books
Music and Movement: supports self-expression, rhythm, and physical activity

Parent Workshops: Learn, share and grow together

Parent workshops are a great way to meet other parents while learning about parenting and lifestyle topics. Workshops are offered once a month in the morning (around 9:30am) and some in the evening (around 6:00pm) to accommodate working caregivers.

Free childcare is provided, giving children a safe and fun chance to be apart from parents for an hour. Interested in joining a workshop before enrolling? Email beststart@msd143.biz for upcoming sessions.

Family Nights: Celebrate family and community together

Family nights are a fun way to spend quality time with your family while connecting with your community. Evening events include activities, games, and opportunities to meet and get to know other families in the area.
